THE AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE

PLANT PROTECTION

The main objectives of the experimental work in Plant Protection is the identification and effective control of pests and diseases of the most important crops, such as vines, citrus, deciduous fruits, vegetables and ornamentals. Both biological and chemical control methods are tested within the framework of integrated pest management programs. Research work is also carried out in nematode control, weed control, insect resistance to pesticides and pesticide residues.
Work in Plant Protection emphasizes the development of diagnostic techniques for plant viruses, tissue culture and the production of healthy and true-to-type propagating material for major horticultural crops like citrus, grapevines and potatoes.
Work on virus diseases and soil-borne pathogens of vegetables is also carried out.
