CYPRUS PEOPLE

CYPRUS PEOPLE;CYPRIOTS

The population of the island is mainly divided into Greek and Turkish communities. The Greeks make up about 77% of the total, and about 18% of the population are Turkish, who live mainly in the north of the island after the Turkish invasion of 1974.

Since the ancient years, Cyprus was always a natural bridge between the cultures of East and Europe. The first immigrants, created the rural civilization and built houses with mud walls. The development of a civilization in the island is being proved by different findings of that period, like detailed created and designed jugs made of stone.According to these historical findings, the island was immigrated by Greeks from "Mykines" at that period;2000 a.d.
Despite the fact that the island is closer to the Asian coasts, the Greek influence and culture was maintained always until today and even during the Turkish occupation that lasted almost for three(3) centuries.(1571 - 1878)
