Foreign Trade Statistics for the Period January-February 2003

The main developments in Cyprus foreign trade during the period January-February 2003 were:

(a) Total imports (covering imports for home consumption and imports placed into bonded warehouses) were £320,6 mn as compared with £377,0 mn in January-February 2002. Total exports amounted to £68,9 mn compared to £79,4 mn during January-February 2002. The trade deficit accounted for £251,8 mn compared to £297,6 mn in the corresponding period of 2002.

(b) Imports for home consumption totalled £281,9 mn compared to £341,8 mn in January-February 2002. Intermediate inputs imported for home consumption in January-February 2003 valued at £102,9 mn or 36,5%, followed by consumer goods with £78,5 mn or 27,9%, capital goods with £35,6 mn or 12,6%, transport equipment with £34,5 mn or 12,2%, and fuels and lubricants with £30,4 mn or 10,8%.

(c) Domestic exports, including stores and provisions valued at £33,9 mn as compared with £36,6 mn in January-February 2002 and re-exports, including stores and provisions to £34,9 mn compared to £42,8 mn in the corresponding period of 2002. Industrial products of domestic produce exported in January-February 2003 accounted for £24,3 mn or 74,9% while exports of raw agricultural products valued at £7,6 mn or 23,5%.

(d) During the period January-February 2003 the EU countries supplied Cyprus with goods valued at £185,2 mn or 57,8% and absorbed goods valued at £19,1 mn or 59,0% of Cyprus domestic exports, excluding stores and provisions.
