Tourism and Travel Statistics September, 1999
  1. The Department of Statistics and Research announces that in September 1999 the number of arrivals covering all categories of travellers (including excursionists) reached 376.241 recording an increase of 13,3% compared to the corresponding month last year. For the period January-September 1999 arrivals of travellers reached 2.501.482 compared to 2.305.026 in the corresponding period of 1998, recording an increase of 8,5%.

  2. Arrivals of tourists reached 309.498 in September 1999 compared to 270.283 in the corresponding month last year, recording an increase of 14,5%. For the period January-September 1999 arrivals of tourists reached 1.961.179 compared to 1.805.335 in the corresponding period of 1998, i.e. an increase of 8,6%.

    The main countries of tourist arrivals are the United Kingdom with 51,6%, Germany with 8,2%, Sweden with 5,1%, Switzerland with 4,1%, Russia with 3,8% and Israel with 3,5%. The overwhelming majority, 78,0% of tourist arrivals was from countries of the European Union.

  3. In September 1999, 48.443 residents of Cyprus returned from a trip abroad compared to 42.563 in the corresponding month last year. For the period January-September 1999, 421.499 residents returned from a trip abroad compared to 383.546 in the corresponding period last year recording an increase of 9,9%.

  4. In September 1999 the number of same-day visitors reached 15.535 of which 1.551 were same-day tourists and 13.984 excursionists. Long-term immigrants numbered 1.180 and short-term immigrants 1.583.
