soliciting flashcards
by giorgos P. - Friday, 15 August 2003, 10:19 AM
Has anyone already typed up flashcards that they'd be willing to share ?

Otherwise I'm going to type up some; I will use UTF-8, and lines formatted like so "είμαι: I am",
because that is what I need to work with my flashcard program. I'm certainly willing to share (copies of my flashcard program or any flashcard files that I type up). I have iconv, so I can convert betwixt UTF-8, ISO-8859-7, MSWin-1253. [I'm also going to type them in monotonic Greek; amongst other reasons, that is what this course uses smile]

BTW, it appears that this web page
http://www.hri.org/fonts/advanced/
has a lot of perl scripts to do these and other conversions (what is ELOT ?)

  Patrick,

My Greek is not very good. I tried to puzzle out what you wrote, aided by a dictionary, but am not sure I managed it; perhaps when you have some spare time, you might be so kind as to amend my mistakes.

Αγαπητε Κυριε Γιοργος, [I changed the final sigma]

Dear Mr George,

Καθε αρχη δυσκολια !

Each beginning difficulty!

With honor, Patrick Byrt

I just finished browsing through the flash card program. It wonderful to practice with.

A suggestion:
Would it be possible to allow the user to enter the words in the answer field? Then, the program would do a string compair and check to see if they are correct. This would allow the user to practice writing, too.

Thank,

Paul

re: edit box to enter answer

Um, yes I suppose it would; you would use it if I put it in?

Now how do you get the Greek letters to show? I have Windows 2000 and Windows XP and both show '|' as each greek character.

If you mean in my flashcard program, you should set the font to one that has glyphs (letters) for Greek.

Run fulge, go to the Options menu, choose Select Font, then choose Select compatible Font, then choose Select Greek compatible font.

I use @Arial Unicode MS myself; it has glyphs for Greek, and for many other scripts.

(I also go to Options/Card Options, and set "Randomize order" and "Flip cards", because I like it to prompt me in English, so I can try to recall--and say aloud--the Greek.)
