THE EFFORTS OF KEEPING THE LINES OF COMMUNICATION OPEN BETWEEN THE TWO COMMUNITIES IN CYPRUS

"ALL-CYPRUS TRADE UNION FORUM"

Prior to the 1974 events the Greek Trade union movement had close contacts in Cyprus and abroad with the Turkish Trade Unions on labour matters and on matters of common interest. After the Turkish invasion to Cyprus in1974, PEO continued its contacts on the basis of a correct line of reapproachment which was later adopted by the other trade unions, the political parties and other organisations.

The accomplishment of many years efforts was the convening of "All-Cyprus Trade Union Forum".The Trade Unions of Cyprus, PEO, SEK, PASYDY, ETYK, POED, OELMEK, DEOK,. POAS, OLTEK, TURK-SEN, DEV-IS, KTAMS, KTOS, KOOP-SEN, BES, KTOEOS representing the whole spectrum of the Working Class of Cyprus, after participating in an All-Cyprus Trade Union Forum held on 16, 17 and 18 January 1995 and after exchanging views on the problems arising for the Working Class as a result of the division of Cyprus, unanimously declare:

1. A speedy and just settlement of the Cyprus problem will be to the interest of the Working Class and of all Cypriots.

2. The settlement of the Cyprus problem must be based on a Federal, Democratic system, the high level agreements and the relevant resolutions of the United Nations Organisation.

3. They firmly believe that the settlement of the Cyprus problem must fully safeguard human and trade unions rights as these are defined in the various conventions of the International Labour Organisation and other world organisations.

4. They believe that in order to achieve the above the following must be safeguarded in the future Federal State:

a) one type system of employment and labour relations

b) a unitary system of Social Insurance

c) unified standards of wages and salaries

d) complete safeguarding of the right of freedom of movement and freedom of choice of employer in any part of Cyprus coupled with entrenched right of freedom of organisation.

e) no discrimination whatsoever in employment, or emoluments arising in connection with ethnic origin, religion, colour or sex.

The Trade Unions declare their firm belief that it will be to the interest of all Cypriots if the settlement of the Cyprus problem aims at establishment of a unitary economy opposing any form of discrimination. All citizens of Federal State of Cyprus must enjoy equal rights and must carry equal responsibilities.

The Trade Unions believe that the Working Class of Cyprus as a whole will be guaranteed better prospects of welfare, economic and cultural growth if the above are safeguarded in a Cyprus settlement.

The Trade Unions of Cyprus decided to extend their contacts and cooperation on a systematic way with a view to achieving the above objectives.

The Trade Unions also call on other professional organisations of Cyprus as well as the political parties to develop relations between them avoiding activities which encourage chauvinism, so that promotion will be helped of mutual understanding and cooperation between the two communities.

The participants in the All-Cyprus Trade Union Forum decided that the Preparatory Committee which comprises representatives of the Trade Unions of PEO, SEK, PASYDY, TURK-SEN, DEVI-IS, KTAMS, acts as a standing co-odrinating committee for the promotion of the targets and objectives of this declaration.

The Trade Unions taking part in the Forum unanimously adopt this declaration and call on the political leaders of Cyprus, on international and regional Trade Unions and other International Organisations, such as UNO, the International Labour Organisation and all parties involved in the effort for a peaceful solution of the Cyprus problem to work for that attainment of the above objectives.

In addition to the above collective Trade Union efforts for the reapproachment of the Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, PEO maintains close relations with the progressive Turkish Trade Unions and extends to them assistance and facilities for the settlement of social security matters arising from time to time (claims for pensions etc) as well as on issues which are directly connected with the private sector (Provident Funds etc.)
