Message of the President

of the Republic of Cyprus Mr. Tassos Papadopoulos

to the Secretary General of the United Nations

 Mr. Kofi Annan

for the 58th Anniversary of the UN Day

Nicosia, October 24, 2003

Excellency,

On this solemn occasion of the 58th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, I wish to convey to you, on behalf of the people, the Government of the Republic of Cyprus and myself our wholehearted wishes, together with the assurances of our constant support and earnest dedication to the efforts for the promotion and the fulfillment of the principles, ideals and objectives of the United Nations.

This year, indeed, has been a difficult one for world affairs and for our common organization. The divisive war in Iraq and the continuing instability in that country, the never-ending cycle of violence in the Middle East and the failure of Cancun , have posed new challenges before us. The increase in international terrorism which included the unprecedented attack on Un Headquarters in Baghdad with the loss of Sergio Viera de Mello and the lives of so many members of the United Nations must, on this solemn anniversary, strengthen our will to act in unison for the promotion of peace which is one of the primary responsibilities of our organization. The United Nations, is uniquely positioned to lead the way under your able leadership.

At the turnoff this new millennium, the United Nations must remain a force for unity in the efforts aiming at systematically reducing poverty, eradicating disease, preventing war or building peace but, moreover, in adequately confronting international terrorism, HIV/AIDS, the digital divide and the repercussions of globalization. With the Millennium Declaration as our blueprint for action, the United Nations members have a responsibility to support Your Excellency’s efforts in making this world a better place to live for future generations.

I wish to stress once more that Cyprus is firmly committed to laying its part towards peace, equality, justice and human dignity. On behalf of the people of Cyprus who have placed their fait and trust in the United Nations, and all that it represents, I would like to express my deep appreciation for your efforts within your good offices mission towards a just, viable and lasting settlement to the Cyprus Problem, based on the implementation of the relevant resolutions of the Organization, which is the only way for ending the Turkish occupation of part of Cyprus and for the reunification of our people and country.

Excellency,

This auspicious day is the perfect opportunity for all the peoples of the world to renew their commitment for the prevalence of moral values, justice and mutual respect among al human beings and all societies. The U.N. Charter remains humanity’s beacon of hope for the future.

Reiterating the assurances of my highest consideration, I remain,

Yours Sincerely

Tassos Papadopoulos
