Consumer Price Index for the Month of August, 1999

The Department of Statistics and Research announces that the Consumer Price Index for August, 1999 decreased by 1,25 units or 1,00 per cent to 124,27 units compared to 125,52 in the previous month. This is mainly due to decreases in the prices of clothing, footwear and furniture due to sale discounts as well as to decreases in the prices of certain fresh fruit and electricity. Increases have been recorded in the prices of certain fresh vegetables and potatoes.

2. The average rate of increase of the Index for the period January-August 1999 compared to the corresponding period of the previous year was 1,36%.

3. The average rate of increase of the Index for the last twelve months (i.e. September 1998-August 1999) compared to the preceding twelve months (i.e. September 1997-August 1998) was 1,56%.
