PATRIARCH BARTHOLOMEW TO RECEIVE HISTORIC CONGRESSIONAL AWARD FROM PRESIDENT CLINTON

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- SEPTEMBER 11, 1997

The U.S. Senate and House of Representatives took action on Friday, September 5 which will result in the bestowing of the Congressional Gold Medal upon the leader of three hundred million Orthodox Christians world-wide, including five million in the United States, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. This historic award, which is the highest civilian honor the Congress can give, was first bestowed upon George Washington in 1776. Since that time, it has been very selectively awarded to significant people, including Thomas Edison and Winston Churchill.

Remarkably, on the very day that this congressional action was taken for the Ecumenical Patriarch, another major religious figure who is a Congressional Gold Medal recipient, Mother Teresa, passed away. Only four religious figures have been awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in the history of the United States.

The 57-year-old Patriarch, who speaks seven languages, will receive the Congressional Gold Medal during his historic visit to the U.S. in October and November of this year. He will visit Washington, D.C., where he will meet with President Bill Clinton, Vice President Al Gore, Speaker Newt Gingrich, and other national leaders. He will also visit Americans from all walks of life in 15 other cities across the nation.

Congressman Michael Bilirakis (R-FL) has introduced legislation which will close to the public the rotunda of the U.S. Capitol building and reserve it for the Patriarch's Congressional visit. The enactment of Bilirakis' legislation is expected.

On Friday, September 5, both the House and Senate reached the threshold for moving such special legislation -- securing at least 290 members of Congress as cosponsors of the bill in the House and at least 40 cosponsors in the Senate. The number who have indicated that they are cosponsors has now risen to a recent record-setting 332 in the House and 46 in the Senate. The prime sponsors of the legislation are the chairmen and ranking minority members of the pertinent committees in the Senate and House -- Senators Alfonse D'Amato (R-NY) and Paul Sarbanes (D-MD) and Congressmen Jim Leach (R-IA) and Henry Gonzalez (D-TX), respectively.

Andrew E. Manatos, the private sector lay chairman of the national Patriarchal Gold Medal project and president of the Manatos & Manatos public relations company in Washington, D.C. said, "Everyone who has had some exposure to the Ecumenical Patriarch and what he has done and continues to do for humankind, is drawn to him and to his powerful message. His work of reconciliation among all peoples and religions leads many to believe that he will achieve his dream of a new millennium of peace in an environmentally-sound world."

"We would like to thank the many hundreds of Greek-American leaders across the country who responded to the call to urge their representatives in Washington, D.C. to cosponsor this important bill, as well as our friends on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. who helped secure cosponsors," said Manatos.

Below is the list of members of Congress and senators who have indicated that they have cosponsored this legislation. For more information, please contact Mike Manatos at (202) 393-7790.
