Re: καθιστοί, κατέρρεε, επέπλεε & είχα πειστεί - a lot of questions about verbs! --\

1.) καθιστοί is an adjective which actually comes from καθίζω, I seat/place (s.t.), thus καθιστός, -ή, -ό -- sitting, seated:
Δεν ήμασταν καθιστοί μέσα στην εκκλησία. = We weren't seated inside the church.

2.) Yes, this a different verb than πιστεύω, it's the passive of πείθω (L83) -- I persuade, convince:
... εγώ είχα πειστεί για το αντίθετο = ... I had been convinced of the opposite.

3.) κατέρρεε is the imperfect of καταρρέω -- I collapse, fall apart:
Τους βλέπαμε καμιά φορά στα δέντρα να παραμονεύουν σιωπηλά μέχρι που κάποιο αδύναμο ζώο θα κατέρρεε. = We saw them sometimes in the trees skulk silently until some feeble animal would collapse.

4.) επέπλεε is the imperfect of επιπλέω -- I float:
Το άψυχο σώμα του άντρα το είχε ξεβράσει η λίμνη και επέπλεε στην επιφάνεια. = The lake had washed up the lifeless body of the man, and it was floating on the surface.

See "Infixation of the past-tense augment, ε- or η-" in Discussion Forum 100 for more about the retention of the ancient augment (the -ε- in κατέρρεε and επέπλεε) in the past of prefixed verbs.
