πολυ and πολλη...also χταποδι

I was in Greek school all of my life, but I still can't tell when to use πολυ and πολλη. Please help!

Also, is octopus οχταποδι or χταποδι? I've asked many Greek people who say it is οχταποδι, but all dictionaries say χταποδι.

Πολύ is either the adverb or the neuter of the adjective smile

So we have

πολλή δουλειά
πολύ ψωμί
δουλεύω πολύ

for example

octopus is χταπόδι which comes from οχταπόδι but has "lost" its initial omicron. I wonder which Greeks you've asked, since we never use the οχταπόδι form really. In Katharevousa there was the slightly ridiculously sounding οχταπόδιον but that's άλλου παπά ευαγγέλιο smile

maybe the Greek people you are asking are not incorrect, but may just be blending the words together

το χταπόδι maybe comes out to you as τ'οχταπόδι

Yeah, Greeks abroad will say "oxtapodi" still, so maybe that's what he meant. We say "oxtapodakia" for the dish on Greek menus.
