case with irregular nouns
by Victoria K - Wednesday, 31 December 2008, 04:32 PM
  Hi,

Can anyone refer me to the discussion that deals with case of irregular nouns? Specifically, I am confused about nouns such as ο μήνας, of which I have seen του μηνός in the genetive!

Thanks very much! smile

Demotic ο μήνας is NOT "irregular" -- its inflection is exactly what one expects of a demotic masculine noun ending in -ας:
o μήνας, του/τον μινα, οι μήνες, των μινών

The του μηνός that you refer to is technically the genitive of the ancient/classical version, ο μήν, and can be seen in more formal writing. For a little more about του μηνός, see "FYI: μήνας" in Discussion Forum 28.

Hope this helps,
