Greek Name Question?
by Douglas (Diogenes) Kritikos - Friday, 17 June 2011, 07:33 PM
  Yiasou,

I recently returned from a 2 week vacation in Greece. Went to Skopolo gera in Mytilini and Naxos. My Family come from a village in Naxos called Apeiranthos when we arrived i had mentioned this fact to a few locals they asked my families name and i said my papous name and they corrected my pronunciation. His first name was Floros last name Kritikos. The first name we have always pronounced it as spelled in English Flor-Os and they pronounced it Flor-yos. I was curious if its a different first name or if for all these years i miss pronounced my papous' first name thank you.

The locals on Naxos are right -- the name is pronounced Flor-yos. Whether your pappous actually spelled and pronounced his name In English this way or not, I don't know, but his Greek name is Φλώριος Κρητικός (Florios Kritikos).

Greg thank you so much for answering my question he did spell and pronounce it FlorOs in english lol but most people called him Freddy the Greek. any way thank you for answering my question. i just want to double check there is no other name besides florios because when i google floros i also find that name too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFwUuPXk95s example Αγιος Φλώρος messina greece. its just weird after all these years my self and other members of the family thought his name to be floros and in america never heard florios.

ο φλώρος is a kind of songbird, about the size of a finch or parakeet, as well as the name of a Byzantine saint (Άγιος Φλώρος), so it's quite possible that his first name was indeed Φλώρος. However, without seeing how your pappous spelled his name in Greek, it's probably not possible to be entirely sure whether his first name was Φλώρος (Floros) or Φλώριος (Floryos), since both names exist in Greek.

Are you sure they told you Floros? It's not a good word!
