When I lived in Cyprus some years ago I was told by an elderly lady in the village not to use the word γυναίκα το introduce my wife (we have been married 60 years!) but instead to say συζυγος as this was more polite and appropriate! I have always used this since, but when I am in Greece they correct me and say γυναίκα also means wife, or woman or partner! Which is correct please? Thanks Gordon {Ιάκοβος) |

You asked this question in 2014 in "Mr. and Mrs!!". And the answer now is the same as then -- both σύζηγος (spouse) and γυναίκα (woman; wife) are correct, the first apparently being more common in Cyprus (as well as in the majority of Greek journalistic writing), the latter being more colloquial in mainland Greece. So keep in mind the existence of regional and/or generational differences in word use in Greek, just as in English. Regards, Greg Brush |
