Human
Resource Management I
The objective of this unit is to explore the human dimension of the organization by
providing exposure to theories, concepts and experiments related to the behaviour of
individuals and groups generally and at the place of work and to acquaint them with the
major issues, problems and practices of contemporary human resource management. Some of
the topics covered are motivation, leadership, work groups, interpersonal communication,
recruiting and selecting human resources, training and development, performance appraisal,
employee rights and discipline, health and safety and compensating human resources.
Management Accounting
The objective of this unit is to introduce participants to the basic accounting and
costing concepts and procedures. Emphasis is given to the understanding of accounting and
costing methods of organizing and analyzing financial and costing data in such a way as to
help managers in the decision making process. This unit covers: the accounting equation,
the double entry system, trading and profit and loss account, balance sheet, manufacturing
accounts, financial statement analysis, cash budget and projected statements, absorption
and marginal costing methods, (classification of costs, cost centres, over-and-over
absorption, cost behaviour, break-even points).
Management Science I and II
These two units provide an understanding of the methods, tools and techniques used in
the scientific approach to the analysis and solution of management problems. The major
topics covered include: linear programming, the transportation problem, the assignment
problem, business forecasting, project management, waiting line models, decision theory,
simulation, game theory.
Information Technology
This unit examine the increasingly important role of Information Technology in Business
Information Systems. The main topics covered include: the machines and their functional
parts and how they work within the information system, the techniques, procedures and
tools used to develop an information system. It also outlines the general purpose software
and new technologies available today to the manager.
Economics for Managers
The objective of this unit is to provide the participants with basic analytical tools
dealing with the most important economic problems both at the micro as well as at the
macro level. Upon completion of this unit, participants should be able to develop an
appreciation of the major economic forces that operate in the economic scene and of the
tools managers use in making rational managerial decisions.
Business Statistics
The objective of this unit is to introduce basic statistical concepts and techniques
that deal with processing, analysis and interpretation of numerical data with applications
to business and economics. The topics covered are: frequency distributions, measures of
location and variation, probability, probability distributions, sampling distribution,
hypothesis testing, linear regression, analysis of variance, time series analysis.
Management Concepts and Practices
This unit is designed to introduce the fundamental management concepts and functions
and also to provide a comprehensive insight of major contemporary management issues.
It reveals the unity of purpose of the specialized management aspects dealt with in the
other subject units and enables the participants to understand and learn to apply their
knowledge in business situations.
Major topics covered: concepts of management and evolution of management theory,
management functions (planning, organising, controlling), decision making, managing
organisational change, learning organisations and the business emerging environment.
Marketing Management
This unit introduces participants to the theory and application of modern marketing and
marketing research. The major topics covered include: the critical role of marketing in
organizations and society, strategic planning, marketing information systems, buying
behaviour, market segmentation, measurement and forecasting of market demand, product life
cycle, pricing, distribution and promotion decisions, organizing, implementing and
controlling the marketing effort. The unit also furnishes the participants with knowledge
on marketing research and it gives participants the opportunity to carry out a complete
research project and submit a written report for evaluation.
Operations Management
International competition, environmental concerns, ethical issues and technological
developments make operations management one of the most challenging fields in the today's
business world. This unit aims to provide participants with an appreciation of the
critical importance of strategic decisions in operations management. It focuses on product
and process design, process analysis, job design, capacity planning, location of
facilities and layout of facilities. Independent and dependent demand inventory models,
(JIT and MRP concepts are discussed), aggregate planning, master scheduling, planning for
high volume products, operations scheduling and project planning. Company visits are
incorporated in the unit.
European Union
This unit provides the participants with an overall view and the perspective necessary
for understanding the complex organisation the European Union is. Emphasis is given on the
European integration, the role of the European institutions, the economic and other
policies and the mechanism of the large European market. The major topics covered include:
the European integration, the institutions of the European Union, the customs union, the
common market, the economic and monetary union, the regional development and social
progress the common agricultural policy, the European Union in the world and current
issues.
Human Resource Management II
The objective of this unit is to give participants the opportunity to develop and
enrich their understanding of their own behaviour and the behaviour of others in the
organization environment. The focus is on creating a learning set-up that will allow them
to experiment and improvise so as to gain practical experience on major human resource
management issues.
Financial Management
The objective of this unit is to provide an understanding of the basic functions of
business finance with emphasis on the framework for decision making in the financial
field. It covers the financial environment, investment appraisal, introduction to risk and
return, portfolio theory and capital asset pricing model, equity share capital, long-term
debt finance, share price valuation and the cost of capital, capital structure policy,
financial planning and management of working capital and international finance.
Productivity and Quality Management
The objective of this unit is to enable the participants to appreciate and understand
the importance of productivity and quality issues in management today. The unit furnishes
the participants with the necessary knowledge about the major widely applied modern
productivity and quality improvement techniques, methodologies and systems and the skills
required in diagnosing the business needs, selecting the appropriate tool and/or designing
the appropriate improvement programme to meet these needs.
Topics covered include: productivity concepts and models of measurement, integration of
productivity and quality, quality management systems (TQM, benchmarking, KAIZEN, ISO
standards), cost of quality.
Management Accounting Workshops
The objective of this unit is to enable participants (through individual and group
work, case studies and reports) to gain practical experience in the use of accounting
methods and systems as an aid to management decision making.
Feasibility and Appraisal of Projects
The main objective of this unit is to provide the participants with a solid
understanding of the main components of a project and also the necessary skills for
preparing and appraising feasibility studies. At the end of the program participants
should be able to prepare feasibility studies and understand the principles of critical
appraisal techniques for project proposals. The topics of this unit are: the project
appraisal process, market analysis, technical analysis, organizational aspects in project
appraisal, quantitative criteria, making necessary assumptions and preparing projected
financial statements, financial appraisal, economic analysis, sensitivity and risk
analysis, writing and presentation of a feasibility report.
Strategic Management
The objective of this unit is to help the participants develop an understanding and
appreciation of how goals and strategies are determined and how the major functional areas
are integrated through top management strategic decision making. Through case studies,
this unit attempts also to help participants develop their skills and abilities to present
decisions taken in complex business situations.
The topics covered are: Introduction to Strategic Management, Strategic Analysis,
Strategic Options, Strategy Evaluation, Strategy implementation, and case studies on
Strategy Analysis and Strategic Decision Making.
Final Project
All the MIM participants are expected, as part of the requirements of the Diploma in
Management, to submit before the end of the program a project report. The objective of the
project work is to give to participants the opportunity to study in depth a subject of
their interest, analyse critically a specific situation and come up with certain
conclusions and recommendations. The topic of the project should be in the area of the
participants' specialisation.
Specialization units
GENERAL MANAGEMENT
Business Planning and Budgeting
The objective of this unit is to train participants in the preparation of marketing,
production and financial plans, point out the interrelationship of the three types of
plans and stress the importance of planning in achieving business goals. This unit covers:
fundamentals of profit planning and control, comprehensive profit planning and control,
sales planning and control, planning production, planning and controlling materials and
labour, planning expenses, development and application of variable budgets of expenditure,
planning and controlling capital expenditures and cash, completion and application of the
profit plan and performance reports for management control.
Organisation and Methods
The objective of this subject unit is to present and examine in depth the basic
concepts and techniques of O & M so that the participants will be able to organize and
control office work more effectively. The topics covered are: what is O & M,
procedures and methods improvement, forms design and control, office layout and space
management, work measurement in the office, records management and micrographics, business
reports.
Productivity and Quality Improvement
Applications
The unit is designed to enable the participants to implement productivity and quality
improvement methodologies, techniques and systems in their business environment and to
enhance participants' capabilities in designing and implementing productivity/quality
improvement programmes. The unit is focused on project work (individual and group) and the
collective evaluation and sharing of experience, providing thus the opportunity to gain
practical experience.
The tools, techniques, models and systems to be covered include: total and partial
factor productivity measurement, multifactor productivity measurement, initiation of total
quality process, learning organisation and total quality management projects, diagnostic
tools and quality audits, continuous improvement KAIZEN and 5S projects, productivity and
quality improvement tools and techniques.
MARKETING MANAGEMENT
Sales Management
This unit examines how the selling function is organised, planned and controlled within
the business organisation. The major topics covered include: the duties and
responsibilities of sales managers, sales force organisation, selection, training,
compensation, supervision, evaluation and motivation, setting sales targets and quotas,
organising sales territories, preparing sales budgets and analysing marketing and sales
costs.
Integrated Marketing Communications
The objective of this unit is to furnish participants with the relevant knowledge
concerning marketing communications concepts. Topics covered are: The nature of Marketing
Communications and their role of Persuasion, the Advertising Agency and the Advertiser,
Creative Advertising Strategies, Message Appeals, Advertising Media, Direct and Catalogue
Marketing, Telemarketing, Public Relations and Publicity, Sales Promotion and
Consumer-oriented Sales Promotion, Live Advertising Workshop.
International Marketing
To present to the participants an overview of the international business environment,
and how the continuing globalization has forced businesses to become more sophisticated
about international marketing.
The unit also demonstrates how to apply the marketing principles in foreign markets.
Topics covered are: the organization of the international firm, global marketing
strategies, international marketing research, product decisions, pricing policy, channels
of distribution, marketing of services and the future of international marketing.
OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT
Operations Management Workshops
This unit amplifies on the concepts and techniques of Operations Management introduced
during the second term and helps participants get a better understanding and confidence
for applying these in the real business environment through the use of case studies.
Technology Management
To give the participants an in-depth knowledge of automation technology in modern
manufacturing and service organisations, to make them aware of the economic as well as
technical issues related to automation and to introduce them to the concept of Total
Productive Maintenance which is a new approach to Plant Maintenance that combines
Preventive Maintenance with Total Quality Control and Employee Involvement.
Statistical Quality Control
The objective of this unit is to give participants an understanding of the principles
underlying the various statistical control techniques and prepare them for the effective
design of appropriate sampling plans and correct interpretation of the results.
It covers the various form of control charts for statistical process control and of
acceptance sampling techniques.
Other Relevant Information
Tuition Fees
The tuition fees for the 1999/2000 program are C£2.000 and are payable in three
installments at the beginning of each term. Fees for Cypriot participants are paid by
their sponsoring organization.
Other Expenses
The cost of purchasing the required books is approximately C£350. Living expenses
(housing, food and incidentals) for an 11-month stay in Cyprus approximate C£3.000. |
